Wednesday Night is Telemark Night at Blackhawk

During the winter season, on Wednesday nights, the slopes of Blackhawk are marked with a historic turn — the telemark turn. That’s right! The telemark turn is not new. In fact, it dates back to the late 1800′s when it was introduced at a ski jumping competition in Norway. While the technique may be well over 100 years old, it is still alive today thanks to its utility and versatility, a few refinements of the technique, a major evolution of the equipment, and the pure grace, exhilaration, and enjoyment one can find with the sport.

The telemark technique not only provides skiers with an opportunity to test their skills at lift areas but also provides skiers with opportunities to travel into the backcountry, whether for a casual day tour in the Midwest; a lovely hut to hut experience in Colorado, Europe, or Canada; an extreme mountaineering expedition to Nepal; or a winter camping trip to Yellowstone. Whether the skier prefers the groomers or off-piste, telemarking has something to offer everyone, from rank beginners to seasoned veterans, and the telemark program at Blackhawk Ski Club can help skiers of all levels find their way.

The Blackhawk Telemark Program has been around for nearly 20 years and is the largest weekly gathering of telemark skiers in the Midwest. Skiers can come out for a casual evening of skiing and camaraderie with other telemark skiers, hone their skills in the gates, or concentrate on their technique with informal instruction by a PSIA Level II telemark instructor.

Telemark Night at Blackhawk Ski Club happens on Wednesday nights, from 6:30 — 9:00 p.m., at the West Chalet, beginning in early January. Skiers need to provide their own equipment. The Telemark Night organizers will assist people who are interested in trying the sport but need equipment.
